  1. I have good news:

    I just saved....  :-))

Actually, I've found that, especially as we get older, our personality types tend to get rounded out better.  I am by nature an Introverted Intuitive Thinking Perceiver but have learned how to deal with people, become quite detail oriented when necessary, and make timely decisions.

For more on psychological typology I recommend a book by Tieger & Tieger Do What You Are.  There are many other good ones out there about this topic.

  2. If you are born with a good attention to details you can be a  doctor or lawyer. But you can work on it. Try this. How many ounces are in a quart? It is not 32. Tell me why any number you come up with is wrong. Look closely at a bottle. If you do not see it, look again.

  3. Some people come by it naturally and others have to work at it.

There is no reason that you cannot train yourself to be detail orientated.

Pick a task and write down every step necessary to complete the task without omitting any details.  Refer to that list every time you have to perform the task and it will become second nature.

For instance, at work, I wrote up procedures for making a bank deposit:

    1.  verify that the check is made out to our company

    2.  pull the invoices that the check is paying

    3.  attach any remittance advice to the invoice

    4.  if no advice, write on the invoice the check #, date & amount

    5.  stamp endorsement on back of check.

    6.  add up checks and attach tape to the invoices being paid

    7.  write up deposit slip and compare total to the tape

    8.  post invoices to Accounts Receivable compare total to tape.

See what I mean?  In no time at all it becomes automatic and you have supporting documentation on hand if you need to verify what you have done.

You can use this for every task where its necessary.

I kept all of my instructions in a binder so that anyone could duplicate my actions and the accounting would retain continuity.

    Hope this helps.

  4. both is possible. if you are born with it then just enhance it. if your not, then learn it. learning how to be detailed-oriented is learned at school or is learned through experience just by sorting/organizing things in the proper way.
