  1. Berkeley is the top public school in all the country they are good at everything (not really the best at sports though).  Their average GPA acceptance rate is 4.21 with over 2100 on the SATs.  They are part of the graduate school UC San Francisco

  2. I'm about to start my freshman year at Berkeley. From what I've observed, Berkeley is one of the best "science" schools. It's got fantastic professors with great credentials (61 nobel laureates are associated with the university) and a history of excellent research. There's too many name them all, but I can give you a couple examples:

-UC Berkeley physicist Robert Oppenheimer (father of the atomic bomb) led the allied effort in developing the atomic bomb as the program director of the Manhattan project.

-Chemist Glenn Seaborg discovered ten new elements. They even named an element after Berkeley (Berkelium).

-Popularized Unix (BSD Unix or Berkeley Software Distribution), RAID, RISC, floating point arithmetic were developed at Berkeley,

In almost every scientific field, you'll find that Berkeley ranks very highly; top 10 if not top 5. For engineering, Berkeley is probably only bested by Stanford and MIT.

Don't think that just because you're an undergraduate that you'll somehow fail to meet professors with excellent research. For my physics class, I'm going to have one of the  professors in the team who created the world's smallest radio: http://www.physics.berkeley.edu/research...

Which is pretty cool in my opinion.
