  1. The bicarbonate ion (hydrogen carbonate) is an anion with the empirical formula HCO3− .

    Hope this is helpful!

  2. It is always anion. exp sodium bicarbonate. NaHCO3 -----Na+   & HCO3-

  3. "-ate" almost always signifies an anion.

The systematic name for the bicarbonate ion is "hydrogen carbonate". The "bi-" prefix is used for a handful of conjugate bases of diprotic acids; it signifies that the ion has one acidic proton. Hence, H2CO3 is a diprotic acid and its conjuagate base is bicarbonate, HCO3-. The conjugate base of bicarbonate is then carbonate, CO3(2-). Similarly, sulfuric acid gives the bisulfate (properly, "hydrogen sulfate") ion HSO4- and the sulfate ion SO4(2-).

  4. anion
