Question:

Is bigger always better?

I'm looking to buy a new set of drivers, but everything out there is huge. I'm not a pro, and in my experience, I hit the ball straighter, and more consistent with a smaller driver head. Right now I use an older set of "Fairway" drivers, but they are old, and beat up. Are there any manufacturers that make drivers that don't have ridiculously big heads?

  1. sure...at least thats what my girlfriend said when i asked her, oh in golf you mean...no idea lol

  2. My girlfriend doesn't say so but i know its true~!

  3. I bought Callaway" Steel heads" the year before the 460 cc drivers came on the scene. As one who always used normal headed drivers, they work fine for my swing. I have taken the larger clubs to the range and on the course several times and have seen no improvement. Cleveland also has smaller heads. Find the nearest golf store or golf shop and see what they have to offer. Then you can decide which way to go.

  4. You make a very good point. Many times, a driver with more mass on the club face can exaggerate mistakes. Not for everyone, but does for me. I have played for 35 years. I am a scratch player. Should be after that many years. I've never liked monster club heads. A lot of my improvement has come from finding a happy medium in my golf equipment. My driver is a Taylormade 540XD with a YS-7 shaft. The clubhead and face is not to large or to small. I've tried many, many different drivers, but yet to find one more controllable and long. I got mine off of ebay brand new for $62.00 including shipping.  Best money I have spent for a driver.

    Hope this might help

  5. no cause being skinny is better than being fat.

  6. Callaway and Cleveland golf company have some nice resonalbly headed drivers... And you could always go down to your local Golf Supply Shop and try out a demo before you buy them

  7. You might look for used clubs. They'll be cheaper and it's more likely that they will be smaller. Length might be a problem, but check Goodwill, Salvation Army and yard sales. You could get lucky.

  8. The standard size for driver currently is 460cc.  Yes there are manufacturers that also make smaller heads.  Like Callaway and Orlimar.

You mentioned fairway "driver", I suspect you're referring to fairway woods or these days they're called fairway metals.  If so, then the reason you hit them better is because they're shorter than regular driver and have more loft.

The longer the shaft the harder it is to hit consistently.    Drivers' shafts are 44.5 - 47 inches long.  Fairway woods, no 3 for example is 1 inch shorter than the driver.

The loft also helps to reduce side spin off the tee.  When you have less side spin, you get straighter shots.  And the additional loft makes it easier to get the ball up in the air.

  9. Try the Taylor Made R5 Dual.  I use it and I hit it consitently either arrow straight or with a touch of draw, and it goes a long way!  It doesn't have the huge head but it's fairly big.
