Question:

Is bike riding enough of a leg workout?

I lift weights for my upper body a few times a week and I don't really do any leg workouts. This is because I only have those bowflex adjustable dumbbells and they're somewhat awkward for lunges/squats, or any leg workout you can do with dumbbells. I'm wondering if my biking is enough to keep my legs strong and balanced with my upper body. When I ride it's for at least 30 minutes, sometimes up to 5 hours, with lots of breaks, and an "interval" like rhythm and it involves a lot of pedaling and lots of jumping to do tricks on the bike.

  1. If biking isnt working your legs enough, then I dont know what will....mix in some mountain biking also........i dont do anything other than biking to work my legs(ok, I did just start XC Skiing last winter) and my legs are rock hard and more than strong enough to handle my 230-lb frame......

  2. I don't know exactly what you are after as far as results. Some look for an aesthetic and others look for a functional quality. If you do timed intervals using a 1:1, 1:2, 1:3 ratio, or if you do hill repeats, and stick with it, you will develop your legs.

Talk with some local cyclists and ask them what they do for a good leg workout. It is most likely that you will struggle with the aerobic side to maintain the workout, but you have to start somewhere.
