Question:

Is biopterin and biotin related?

just a quickie....im a bit confused at the moment - are they related in any way?

i know biopterin (tetrahydrobiopterin) is required for phenylalanine to go to tyrosine by phenylalanine hydroxylase...

and biotin is b complex vitamin B4 that serves as a coenzyme in carboxylation reactions by carrying activated carbon dioxide and is inhibited by avidin found in raw egg white...

if we're deficient in biotin, can this effect the reaction of phenylalanine to tyrosine?

Thanks in advance :):)

  1. That is way more biochem than I can recall! Maybe you would have better luck putting this question in the biology section? Or a biochem section if they have it?

    Found this link: http://www.reactome.org/cgi-bin/eventbro...

I thought biotin was B7 (also heard it called vitamin H).  I do know that in some cases, increasing biotin in pts with PKU can improve some of their symptoms.

    Sorry...not of much help!
