  1. It is only flinching if it is associated with a wince or some other reflexive action that moves your body.

  2. You are correct blinking is a natural function. It keeps the eyes moist and clean. The blink response to something approaching the face is natural yet must be trained to be under control. A good fighter will watch for your blink to change up and or strike before you can respond. Learn not to blink once a combat has been engaged. Blink only when there is a clear opportunity. This must be controlled..

  3. It depends. Blinking is a natural reflex, like you said, but unfortunately, in the blink of an eye, a lot can happen. In martial arts it is important to blink as quickly as possible. If someone throws a punch at you or you throw a punch and you blink, this can have devastating circumstances. My kung fu teacher has taught us (through unusual means i.e. hitting us on the head with a toy ball to keep us from blinking) that you can't blink. If you blink, you can temporarily let down your guard.

Blinking isn't necessarily the same as flinching, but blinking is not something one should take for granted as a "natural" thing. Of course you have to blink, but make sure that it is done at opportune moments. This is something that is necessary to learn when learning a martial art.

  4. If you jerk your head back and blink, then it is flinching.

  5. it's not flinching!!! its totally natural like you said.
