  1. nope - Brisbane is incredibly humid for around 3 to 4 months every year

  2. Brisbane and Sydney have the mildest climates in Australia. That is, you have fewer very hot, or very cold days.

Sydney, is a great party city, and if you live on the outskirts, fairly cheap. But transport is terrible and if you head to the inner city, rend and house prices are stupidly expensive (one of the most expensive cities in the world to live).  Sydney has the most number of job opportunities and a highly multicultural population.

    Brisbane is much cheaper.

You might consider also Melbourne is the cheapest big city in the world to live in (this is the cost of living versus salary).

Many people really love Perth as well. But it is very remote.

So to make a long story short, you will find Brisbane to be highly affordable, has cheap locations near public transport, and if probably a better city to live in with a young family.

  3. Brisbane is WAY better than Sydney.  Sydney is too busy, way too expensive, too rough.  I know it comes down to what area you live in, and any city has its pros and cons, but I've lived in both Sydney and Brisbane and I would go back to Brissy any day of the week.  I've lived in Caboolture, Redcliffe areas and know people who've live in the inner city areas too.  Start searching schools by checking the Queensland public schools websites.  Private schools usually have thier own websites, but a search online should show what's there.  New construction areas are going up all the time.  Maybe find an Australian Parents Forum (like www.bubhub.com) and ask there too about schools and areas.  I found the north side much better than the southside.

We left Sydney because we found it unsuitable for our kids, but we did live in the inner west, which isn't the best of areas.

As for driving, Brisbane has much less traffic than Sydney.

We are now in Newcastle and it's brilliant too.  Check out some of the other cities around, you may like them.

You may also want to check out the job availability in the areas you're looking at too.  Try https://jobsearch.gov.au for starters.

Good luck with your move.  You'll LOVE Australia - it truly is a unique and brilliant place.  :)

  4. I live in Sydney and has all my life. I don't really like it to be honest... it's too busy, crowded and very expensive. What I love is the amount of things to see and do and the weather. Education in Sydney is also great but I find it rather demanding.

Brisbane, never lived there but it is cheaper for a start. The air is also better as there's not as much traffic congestion as Sydney.

  5. I was born and bread in the inner city of Sydney, so obviously I will be a little bias when I say that Sydney is a better place to live...BUT

moving from Hawaii, Brisbane will probably be a lot closer (in setting) to home. The beaches are closer and it may have a better family environment.

It also comes down to $$$, Sydney has quite expensive house/ rent prices at the moment but as far as schools and community and convenience, Sydney has all of that.

    Have fun and good luck..:)

  6. No no no no no!!!!

I have lived in both for quite a while and Brisbane, although once a nice city with a gentle, laid-back feel, is now becoming an absolute dive. The roads are on permanent rush hour - you cannot drive anywhere without it taking soooo long. It's got the feeling of a massive city at times without having the culture and array of things to do that other cities have.

Brisbane's best feature is teh fact that it is on the river - the river side of the city, South Bank, those areas are so nice... but once you get ouit into teh suburbs, rent is out of this world expensive (getting just as bad as Sydney) and it is really hard to find a decent place.

As far as being a first time driver, I guess Brisbane is better, although not by much.

I suppose it really dpeends what you are looking for...

  7. To be honest I think Sydney does have very nice light town suburbs lovely for letting your kids grow up in but Brisbane is nice as well, and somehow quieter. Albany creek is a nice suburb in Brisbane, quiet and close to schools, shops etc.

Otherwise in Sydney theres the coastal suburbs or inner western like Paramatta or Liverpool. Some coastal suburbs like Bronte are nice if you like living near the water and close to shops.

Im sure there are schools around there too. It really depends on what you like best.
