Question:

Is brown or black hair the dominant gene?

And is this strange I have choclate brown hair my dad had black hair my mum has light brown hair how did I get dark brown is it a mix or set back...

  1. Hair color is determined by many genes (we don't even know how many yet).  But, the basics of how hair color works is that the genes in your hair follicles determine how much melanin to produce and deposite.  If you have darker hair, you are producing more melanin.  If you have light hair, you are producing less.  Each of the genes involved likely has a normal functioning allele ("on") and a mutant recessive that doesn't produce melanin ("off").  So, the more genes you have that are "on", the darker your hair will be.  Obviously you inherited some "on" gene and some "off" genes.


  2. The darker is the more dominant gene, the lighter you go, the more recessive.  As for your own coloring, you're obviously a combination of the two, not a set back.  Embrace it!
