my insurance wont pay for wellbutrin no more because theres a generic now. i have taken it for 2 days now and i dont feel good. ive been emotional and tense and my stomach hurts. Is this from the generic? so i checked it out at google and i saw many negative articles about the generic being absorbed into the system more quickly than wellbutrin. am i imagining this? can anyone knowledgeable about these drugs tell me any thing positive about the generic or are these statements reliable? thank you

  1. Generic drugs have to have the same active ingredients as a brand name medication.  It is very rare for a generic form of a medication to not work for you after the brand name has been effective.  There are a few types of medications that have more of a risk of a difference between brand and generic - like coumadin (a blood thinner) or levoxyl (thyroid medication), because they have many different doses that can alter slightly between brand and generic forms.

A lot of people perceive that generics cause problems where the brand does not - 99% of the time, it is simply the patients perception.

  2. I switched to the generic about 4 years ago with no ill effects.  That being said, there have been recent articles about some generics not acting quite the same way as the originals.  I do know that more than one company manufactures them, but I would talk about what is happening with your doc.

I remember the second time I convinced myself I did not need welbutrin.  I was on a job out of town and had to be at a meeting at 10 o'clock, woke up at six and could not make myself get out of bed until 9:45.  I got up only because the fear of losing my job was worse than the fear of going to the meeting.

I went home and took two tablets and could actually feel them entering my system.  Everything I read seems to say that it takes a couple of weeks to build up enough in your system to be effective and likewise takes a couple of weeks to wear off.   But that did not happen to me.  So when you say you are feeling an immediate effect I believe you, but I do not know why you are.

So, regardless of what you think is happening you should make an appointment very quickly with your doc and discuss how you feel with him.  What I do know from personal experience is that depression is only the tip of what is neurochemically wrong with me.  I do not have a bad case of OCD, but it is noticeable when I am off meds.  You might have something else going on that the original welbutrin took care of but this does not.

    Good Luck

  3. The drug products budeprion XL and Wellbutrin XL are two different trademark names but both are medically considered to be " Bupropion Hydrochloride ".

Almost with every insurance company it is normal for them not to pay for one product of the same medicine compared to a different such product. Usually the insurance companies do that to make more profit by only covering the cheaper brand product of a medicine.

Clinically, be it a cheaper brand or the expensive brand; they are all tested for their authenticity of the medicine contained in them ( especially in the first world countries ).

You are not supposed to feel much different when it comes to switching just the brand name. It is as simple as drinking water in a cup or in a glass, it will still be the same water that's drank. You are just giving yourself tension and worrying for nothing.

By the way, what You described as being emotional, tense and having stomach pain; these are just the side effects of this medication. In such a case, You are to contact your specialist as soon as possible.

Wishing You A Good Health !
