Starting up a business is risky and expensive - you are basically buying yourself a job. And you must remember that one out of three new businesses fail.

But if your heart is set on it, you should really start properly. First you must work for someone in the field or area you are interested in, to learn all you can about its ins and outs. Then you must make your own business plan (very detailed) to make clear everything about your prospective business. This will include things like the number of employees, location, supplies, costs such as rent and utility bills, insurance, and most important of all, the market assessment for the goods or services you are planning to supply. You have to assess competitors in your field, who is going to buy from you, how much, and when.

It's a lot of paperwork, and you will certainly need advice. If you weigh this up with being an employee, it's much more work of course... but you are planning to make much more money.

Remember, if you fail to plan, you plan to fail.

I suppose that depends what business! But really, there are pros and cons to each. Being an employee is sometimes demeaning, but you can sleep a lot better at night.
