  1. I bought a 97 with 124,000 miles 5 years ago, and now it has 174,000 and no major repairs.  The mpg is 16 in town and 20 on the highway. It's a good peppy truck..

  2. Please trust me on this.  It's better to be safe than sorry.  When you buy this car, your money will be gone, and it will be too late.  Fords as a whole, and explorers even more so, are not typically reliable vehicles over 100,000 miles.  Stick with a Honda, Toyota, or even a Chevrolet if you end up getting something with higher mileage like that, to get your purchase price down to a reasonable level.  These cars typically hold up much better than Ford, just make sure they were taken care of, and have any vehicle inspected by someone who knows vehicles very well (mechanic, etc) before spending your money on it.  Please stay away from Dodge and Ford if you end up getting something with high mileage, or you will be sorry and so will your wallet.  Nobody needs that kind of trouble in their life, financial or otherwise.  Trust me

  3. Depends.  You got it inspected, so the mechanic said the ride has a clean bill of health already.  Buy it then.  (You did already, right?  Of course, you are a smart buyer!)

One note:  The 4.0L v6 is fine, the transmission behind it is usually a piece of junk.

Save for a transmission one day.
