Question:

Is buying a 300 card "Builder Deck" a good call? (Magic the Gathering)?

I haven't played Magic for more than a week and I have a theme deck but I was thinking of getting a Builder Deck so I could make some decks. A Builder Deck is like 40 cards of each color + lands and such. Please let me know and please be specific.

Thank You

  1. What i usually do when im interested in making a new deck is I start of with a proxy deck.

    Take 60 lands.

Leave 21-23 lands a side for your deck.

Take the rest of the un used lands, write on them. Write the name of the card, ability, creature, spell, what ever it is..pretend that land is the spell you are willing to purchase.

Play with that proxy deck and see if you are willing to spend money on that deck. When you are ready to purchase those cards i suggest you go to Cardkingdom.com. They make it easy for you to see how much the card cost and what it does.

  2. no! $300 on 1 card

  3. Most card shops have "20 drop, 1000 card" deals.  These are cards that might be worth the $20 drop for and are able to make a bunch of interesting decks, if you get three "rainbow" then you have a potentially lethal number of decks ready to be made.  Then if you are looking for specific cards afterwards to boost them, I would suggest buying singles either at shops or ebay (one is usually cheaper than the other).  I was able to make a random but excellent vintage deck from the three kingdoms portal.

Good luck and let me know if this helps you out.

  4. instead of buy a load of cards that are mediocre i'd buy individual cards that I NEED. you may spend a bit more, or you may save some money. use magic workstation to test out your deck. once you have a good idea of the deck you want to build and your sb, buy those cards from ebay.

your friends will give you free land.... i would =/

  5. Buying 1000 junk cards can be good to start off in magic the gathering. You get to see a lot of cards and start to see interesting combos. But usually this is not going to get you a really good deck.

If you are looking for a really good deck to compete then start by testing it on Magic workstation (www.magicworkstation.com) where you can download a free magic the gathering data base to test out deck ideas verse other people. If you don't like spending a lot of time on the computer then create proxies by writing card effects on junk cards or by writing on pieces of paper and sticking them in sleeves with real cards.

Once you have decided on a deck then usually the best way to buy singles is off ebay.

    Have fun and be creative!
