Question:

Is buying a 99 Jeep Grand Cherokee as a secondary vehicle a bad idea?

Currently my Girlfriend has Chevy Cobalt 4cyl, so it's what we mainly drive and it's obviously decent on gas.

Now we both like jeep and are looking for a secondary vehicle with a little more power and space in case we need to haul something, or pack something that a car obviously couldn't handle.

So we we're looking at a Jeep Grand Cherokee with 6cyl 4x4. Now obviously everyone's first reaction is not to because it's a gas hog, but we'd obviously be driving it a lot less than the car. What are everyone else's thought?

  1. Mine is an 2001, I bought it new, and it only has 49K on it now. I've never had any problems with it. It gets about 13mpg in the city, and about 20mpg on the highway. Good luck!

  2. Great idea. I have a cheap econo honda for everyday driving, but also had a 94 Jeep GC as a second vehicle for hauling or bad weather. It recently got totaled, so I found a 97 Jeep Cherokee and love it. The Jeep Cherokee is considered by many to be the best SUV ever made. The Jeep GC is full time 4 WD, has more bells and whistles and drives smoother, much like a car, while the Cherokee is 2/4 WD, great for off road but drives like a truck. Whatever you get, stick with the 6 cyl 4.0. That engine is referred to as bulletproof. Stay away from the optional V8 engine that came with the Limited - that was a real hog.

  3. Everyone needs to stop being afraid of gas...

    10k miles per year lets say (way more than you'd use if you it as a secondary car)

    4$ a gallon

    lets see what the difference is between 25mpg and 20mpg

    25mpg = $1600

    20mpg = $2000

    OH NO!!! $400 HOW WILL I EVER FCUKING LIVE!?

    I have nothing against the OP, I just hate everyone. Seriously tho, don't worry about a 6cy 4x4 (you won't have it in 4x4 all the time anyway)

  4. any year jeep is good (04 was the last good year) we have had very good reliability with jeeps we had a 95 GC sold it with 190,000miles no major problem a 01 GC with 130,000miles no major problems we now have 3 04 GC's and we love them i have the 4.7 V-8 and my best highway mpg was 19.3 city is around 15-16mpg i think if you can find a jeep in the price range that is good for you than go for it just remember to check it out first because would you want a jeep that has been mudding like this one(my buddy)

  5. Right now its a very good idea.  People are unloading big cars and you can buy one pretty cheap.  Even a Jeep gets SOME mileage and if its a low miles driver, the MPG won't make a difference.

  6. i recommendbuying one that is newer than a 99 .. say like an 02 or 03. and i agree with the first person to answer..everyone is trading in their SUV's and no one is willing to buy them so you could probably get a pretty decent deal on a newer one. So i think it would be a good idea.
