Yes, canoe racing is a sport.  In addition to the very serious spring olympic racing mentioned above, it's possible for the rest of us to race as well.   I used to do some marathon canoe racing.  I had a racing boat, but they had recreational classes as well for people with your typical recreational canoes.

Check out the American Canoe Association homepage, and do a google search for "marathon canoe racing" and "canoe racing" in your area.

Where do you live? Canoeing is an Olympic Sport. Flat water and Whitwater Slalom.  There are many levels of competition. Inquire at your national organization.
