Is car sales tax in MA 5% of the value....?

or 5% of what you paid for it? I'm buying a Pontiac Sunfire in a few days and i wana know what i'll be spending @ the registry. i know it's 5% of the price when buying from a dealer, but what about privately?

all sales tax is a percentage of what the sale price (i.e. how much you paid)
