Question:

Is card game luck conserved?

I've got a solitaire card game i play. If i have a very poor game, i say to myself, "self, my next game will be better". And it nearly always is. Now, intellectually, i understand that if the deck is really well shuffled (and the computer does this really well), then one game does not depend in any way on previous games. And though over all, the average comes out to the average, five bad games in a row will not produce a good game.

And yet, the next game is usually much better. What's going on?

  1. mind over matter.  some ppl say that if you visualize what you want to happen, you'll do better.  by telling yourself, you're going to do better, you may very well be paying better attention in the next game, thereby doing better.

  2. The probablity of getting two difficult games in a row is equal to the probablity of getting one difficult game squared. For example if the probability of getting one difficult game is one in ten, then the probablity of getting two difficult games in a row would be one in a hundred. Therefore if the probability of getting a difficult game is low, the probability of getting two difficult games in a row is really low.
