Is carlisle to leeds via newcastle a "permitted route" and can you do it on 1 ticket? In a previous question I found out I could stop off anywhere along the route but now I need to know if the route is allowed or not. Someone said only direct or via preston is allowed

  1. Your ticket is valid for a break of journey if you hold a standard/first open return ticket both out and return

A saver, business saver,is allowed a break of journey on the RETURN PORTION ONLY, providing that you complete the journey within the one calendar month that is dated on your ticket. Do not let anyone tell you otherwise

National rail enquires are c**p, i would not use them under any circumstances.

  2. no need b**** rail rover for that one

  3. I answered your previous question too, I work in the ticket office of a major train company and the route via Newcastle didn't sound valid, I checked at home using the online routing guide and it appeared to be invalid, I have since checked again at work and can confirm that Newcastle is not a Permitted Route for a Carlisle to Leeds ticket.

  4. I dont think it is a permitted route. It looks like you would have to pay more, however you can get it on 1 ticket, via any permitted route.

Best thing to do is ask at your local station, local knowledge is a lot better and they may know of a way around the any permitted.

    Good Luck

  5. Would this be an enquiry so you can do a round trip using different routes?

If so...leeds to carlisle via settlle(direct) or clapham line change Lancaster or via hebden bridge to preston or via Manchester are all "reasonable routes" you can if you have lots of time to spare, travel by the cumbrian coast route via Barrow and Whitehaven.

Via Newcastle...ask about the "excess fare" to be added on that route...sometimes there is none to be added on some journeys and only requires the ticket to be endorsed "via(route)".

  6. No its not a permitted route, i just checked for you on the "Rail Journey Information System".

Sorry you would need to change somewhere like preston, if you like you can buy a single across to newcastle from carlisle then a single from there to leeds (same for return)

    Cheers Mc.

edit: Also if you read on the national rail website it says "WARNING: you may require two seperate tickets for this journey"

edit: For the break of journey you have to check with the type of ticket for e.g

Cheap day return break of journey on outward and return permitted

Saver Return break of journey permitted on return portion only.

Standard Open Return break of journey is permitted on outward and return portion.

Standard Open Single Break of journey is permitted but with a maximum stop over of 2 hours.

The above maybe confusing as they are currently renaming all the tickets to stupid things like Standard anytime Ticket :oS

  7. These days a permitted route tends to be one that doesn;t require a major detour.  Carlisle to leeds via Newcastle is a pretty long way off a straight line and all the routes bookable through the on line sites are via preston or Lancaster.....  Even if it was allowed, you would theoretically not be allowed to break the journey at Newcastle - a permitted route with a change allows for a change of train only....
