  1. Honestly: try to dress just comfortable. Rome can be very hot and you'll need comfortable shoes to do all the walking.

Italians tend to wear long trousers even in Summer. trainers and a polo would be ok.

Mind that with short trousers and naked shoulders (for a woman) you might not be allowed in some churches.

  2. so many  tourists in rome wear flip-flops everywhere they go...Italians are not used to!if you don't want to stand out as a tourist wear shoes -snakers are perfect!

  3. Coming from Australia, where the standard of dress is quite casual, I found ordinary people in Rome to be more dressy than ordinary people in Sydney.

But, having said that, smart casual attire is quite acceptable in most places. Where there is a more formal occasion, people will usually say to you to get more dressed up.

If I am lucky enough to go again, I will pack at least one nice evening wear outfit (smart pants suits or nice frock). For men a good, dark suit would be very useful if you plan to stay any length of time.

But mostly, neat jeans and a good shirt or t-shirt (not torn or ripped, or 'grungy') will be fine for when you are seeing the sights and walking around, and for most lunch time dining.

For evenings, smart casual is still OK most places, although I got the impression most Roman men wore a collared shirt in the evening.

Italian people generally dress very well, in my opinion, but you will not look out of place in a good pair of pants or fashionable jeans, and a nice shirt.

    Have a great time :-)

  4. I should have asked this question before I went.  Most of the people are tourists.  Make sure you dress really comfortably, you will be doing a ton of walking.  I heard all these rumors about no white sneakers, everyone is dressed, etc.  It's not true.  Wear what you would at home for the day.  At night in restaurants business casual seemed to be the norm.  I had to do laundry because I didn't bring enough casual clothes.  One thing to remember is that you can't go in all the cathedrals with shorts, tank tops, etc.  Anything too revealing.

  5. ..no tank tops or shorts, but comfy is fine.

  6. Just dress comfortably, especially in summer.

I spent nine weeks in Rome for a couple college courses.  our prof. made us wear pants to not look like tourists.  really, romans could tell we were tourists anyways.  after a couple weeks in Rome's heat we wore shorts.

to enter the churches, your shorts must fully cover your knees.

  7. Natives did seem to dress up a little more.  But most places you go will be surrounded by other tourists.  They dress casually.  You will not see tank tops or shorts, though.

  8. I wear short.... but i'm an exception.

90% of the people walking around in the center of Rome are tourist, you stand out if not a tourist.

Dress as you fill like more confortable.

In Italy short is beach wear, jeans is casual ;)
