Question:

Is changing districts always this hard?

I recently accepted a teaching position in another district, and the technicalities of changing districts is really stressful. Between insurance gaps, salary gaps (a whole month!), and trying to get ahold of people during summer vacation, I'm beginning to wonder if this was the right choice. Is this a typical experience for changing districts, or is my new district not what I thought it was when I applied?

  1. I'm not sure this is typical.  I didn't experience these troubles because the district I transferred to was very organized and I didn't lose any time in benefits or salary.  I'm sorry you're having this experience, but I've worked for a district that didn't have it together either.  See how the school year goes...Good luck.

  2. I've only changed districts once. I guess I was lucky because back then I was offered the option to get paid over a thirteen-month period rather than twelve months in order to avoid that gap in pay. It's probably too late, but you can ask and see if that's an option for you.

Trying to get ahold of people during summer vacation will always be a challenge. It doesn't matter what district you are in.

  3. it's rough. long process.
