basically, charcoal is made from burning wood?

so how many tons of greenhouse gas are we using for delicious barbacue flavor....

    Charcoal is the blackish residue consisting of impure carbon obtained by removing water and other volatile constituents from animal and vegetation substances. Charcoal is usually produced by heating wood, sugar, bone char, or other substances in the absence of oxygen (see char). The soft, brittle, lightweight, black, porous material resembles coal and is 85% to 98% carbon with the remainder consisting of volatile chemicals and ash.

  5. Charcoal does not contribute extra carbon to the atmosphere because it is taken from plants and not fossil fuel. The trees are grown to make charcoal and for a short time remove carbon from the atmosphere. However during a bad air day, charcoal is a killer.  On clear days it is not so bad.
