Question:

Is charging home phone too much bad?

Hello, I just wanted to ask, I just bought a new set of phone for my house and I charged them overnight, it's not like I need to use them a lot. So if I leave them in the charger for a long time everyday, is that not so good for the battery life? Thank you.

  1. No, the phones are designed to be left on the chargers.  They will not actually recharge until the battery drops below a certain point.  In the old days, you were supposed only charge after the battery dropped below a certain point, but that is really no longer the case.

  2. Its only bad if the phone gets hot over extended charging. Plus, if this is the case you might want to have it replaced.

  3. Prior experience - For a cheap cordless phone ($15-$20 range), with minimal use and constant charging over a period of 6 months, the battery life was down to 1-2 minutes of talk time.

A couple of factors come into the picture here:

    1. Quality of battery

    2. Charging mechanism of the phone: always charging even when the battery is charged is bad for battery life.

  4. It depends on the type of battery that is in the phone. Most home phones use NiMh (nickel-metal hydride) batteries and NiMh batteries have a certian "life span". NiMh batteries use 1 life span every time it is placed on the charger no matter what, dead or charged. FOR example, if a battery NiMh battery has a lifespan of 1000, performance will decrease greatly as you approch 1000 charges, even if the battery is not dead when it is placed on the charger. So, yes every time it is placed on the charger you consume 1 life and it will wear out the battery. To get the most out of your phone you should only charge the phone when the battery is getting low. SOME phones are smart and know not to charge the battery unless the battery is low, but if the charge has dropped even a minimal ammount the phone base is going to charge it and consume 1 life.

If your phone has a Lithium-ion battery they have a much greater life span than Nimh and it is not a big concern.
