  4. Hello krc,

I am a certified nutritional consultant and have been studying natural healing for over 12 years.  In this time, I have also been actively involved in the supplements industry.

One of the main benefits of working in the industry is that I get to talk to people about their personal experiences with natural remedies.

Cherry juice is known to be very good at reducing the symptoms of gout.  It is not just a way of reducing symptoms, though, it actually addresses the cause of the pain in the first place, at least in the short term.

Gout is caused by acidity in the bloodstream and in the tissues of the body.  This acidity increases the likelihood of uric acid crystals forming.  When these uric acid crystals form, they are shaped like needles.  These crystals stick into the cartilage in the peripheral extremities, usually the toes, and cause extremely painful inflammation.  The inflammation is your body giving you a warning sign that there is an imbalance.

Cherry juice, specifically Montmorency cherry juice, has a strong alkalizing effect in the body and helps to break up the uric acid crystals.  This results in less damage to the tissues.  At that point, your body can go to work healing the damage caused by the uric acid crystals.  Most people I have worked with have seen good results with anywhere from 1-2 ounces a day, consumed on an empty stomach.

To really get to the heart of the imbalance, you need to figure out why you are acidic and reduce those behaviors.  The typical american diet is very acidic.  Americans eat lots of processed foods, large amounts of meat, dairy, and processed grains.  All of these foods can contribute to acidity.

In order to get long term relief from gout, you should eat more fresh fruits and vegetables with a strong emphasis on green, leafy vegetables.  All fresh fruits and vegetables have an alkalizing effect and have a wide variety of other great health promoting qualities as well.  Even foods that seem very acidic, like lemons, will have an alkalizing effect in your body after being digested.

Celery seed is another supplement that can have a beneficial effect on the symptoms of gout.  Barley grass juice, wheat grass juice, spirulina, and chlorella can also help.  One more old-school remedy for gout and other forms of arthrits is to mix 1-2 teaspoons of raw, organic apple cider vinegar with 1-2 teaspoons of raw honey.  Add to 8 ounces of distilled water and drink 2-3 times a day.  Doing this on an empty stomach, first thing in the morning and last at night is particularly effective.

One last thing to consider is stress.  Stress can also have an acidic effect on the body and lead to adverse symptoms.  I have found deep breathing and meditation to be the most solid long term strategies to reduce stress.  When you first wake up in the morning, take 10 long, slow, deep breaths.  Do the same last thing at night and while you are in your car driving.  This can be incredibly effective and doesn't cost anything.

    May your healing be swift.
