I have a huge problem with reading. I can't remember what I read and I have huge troubles trying to comprehend stories and long reports. I'm currently under a Special Education program and I'm just woundering is it Child Study Team's responsibility to help me over come that problem? I'm getting very upset with that program because their not helping overcome this problem I have. They had soo many years to try to fix it, but it seems they care more about labeling then helping me, which is making me very depressed. I'm also thinking about sueing them once I graduate high school, because of all the stress their putting me through.

  1. You have to get your parents involved in this.

A child study team is NOT special education, so I doubt you are in a special education program.  Do you have an IEP plan?

Schools do NOT have to help with ANY problem a child has unless the child is in special ed (has IEP plan)

With a child study team, this is just a bunch of teachers getting together and 'guessing' at what might work for you.

You need special ed because then they will have to have specialized teachers who are trained and qualified in teaching you teh RIGHT way.

Child study teams do NOT have to do this.

In order to get help thru special ed, your parents will need to write a letter to district sped director requesting an initial full educational eligibity evaluation.

If you really ARE in special ed and have an IEP plan, your parents have to request an IEP meeting and tell them what they are doing is not working and to come up with what WILL work.

Your parents are an EQUAL members of the special ed team and they can tell the school waht they want them to do to help you.

If you are in special ed, your parents can sue them NOW. Once you get out of school you can't sue them.

  2. No, the child study team's job is to coordinate services for you, find out the best ways to meet your needs in the classroom, and gather data from all your teachers.  They are not the team that will generally provide any services that you may require, such as reading comprehension, but are the group that (along with your parents) will determine what kind of modifications or accomodations you will need to succeed in school.  Their job is more of the planning, not the implementing of your individual plan.

  3. I understand your frustration. Without further information about your reading and what they are doing to help it is impossible to say. You may be dyslexic. If you are, you should have had a multi-sensory program to help you overcome this. Dyslexia also interfers with comprehension because you are likely an "audio" learner or a "visual" learner.

If you are an audio learner, that means you need to hear what is being read. Reading silently, by yourself, will do you no good. When you read at home or to study, you need to read everything aloud. This will help you comprehend the words that are read. You may even need to have your tests read for you or take them in a place where you can read them aloud.

Books on tape will also help you. There is a great website, audible.com, that you can download books you need to "read" for class. Get the hardcover and follow the book as it is read.

If you are dyslexic you will always be dyslexic. You will need to learn stragities to help you overcome this. Please do not give up. I can tell from your question that you are a very bright person, like all dyslexics. The majority of dyslexic people are average to above average in intelligence. Many are gifted and superior in intelligence. However, their reading difficulties will often hold them back from reaching their true learning potential.

I wish I had more information to help you further. Have you been tested for a specific learning difference? Do you have ADHD? What are they doing to help you now?

For now, please do not get down. Things will be OK. The fact that you learn differently does not mean you are doomed. I will do all I can do to steer you in the right direction. Take Care.

Edit: Why all the CAPITALS! Your response sounds so rude.
