Is chinese rice vinegar a good substitute for chinese cooking wine?

  1. Not at all, rice vinegar is used for sushi not cooking.

    And it has a sour taste.

    A good substitute for cooking wine is sherry.


  2. It does have a different taste, but it should still be okay.  How much does your recipe call for? --- if not too much, I wouldn't worry about it!

    Chinese cooking wine is sweet and has fragrance ...

    they are not the same ...... same as western vinegar and wine ...you don't mix them up....

    Vinegar =/= wine!!!!

    Vinegar tastes sour and it tastes a lot different from Chinese cooking wine!   They are different.  You may substitute Chinese cooking wine with Japanese sake or may be white wine but neither with vinegar.
