He is the only switch hitter in history w/ more than 300hr's and above 300 avg. He's gonna end his career with over 500 hr's.(405 now) He's won the batting title, been an MVP, and been a WS MVP. The only comparable player for me is mickey mantle, but if you compare their stats they look basically the same...and chipper still has a good 3 or 4 years left.

  1. You've got to be kidding. How about  Pete Rose? I like Chipper, but he's no Mickey Mantle.

  2. no pete rose is, but if you hate him cz of gambling, then Chipper is "first"

  3. no, its mickey mantle

    hes been MVP 3 times

    .985 fld. %

    16 time all star

    a triple crown

    a gold glove

  4. Ever heard of a guy named Mickey Mantle? He played for the Yankees in the 50's and 60's.

  5. i do see your point, and I agree that Chipper is a very good player, I still gotta go with Mantle.

I would however rank Chipper second although Eddie Murray is also very close, but still I Gotta have Mantle first.

For this argument though, I can't bring in the old 'if only Mantle was not hurt so much' because the same can be said for Chipper.

The only thing I'm not completely sure of in your statement is Chipper getting to 500 Homeruns...yes he can get there and has a good shot to get there, but he may not. He still needs 95, and depending on how hurt he remains, he might just miss it.

BTW in about 10 years or so, you may have to include Mark Tiexiera (sp) in this argument

  6. mickey mantle is better

  7. If you ever saw Mantle in his prime, you would not even mention Jones or Murray, or Rose in the same breath as the Mick.  And I was never a big Yankees fan, but you have to give him his props.

  8. Mickey Mantle is the greatest switch hitter ever.  I think even Chipper Jones would tell you that.  BTW I hate the Yankees, but Mantle was the man.

Mantle has a lifetime .298 avg, 536 HRs (in an era where 500 homers meant something) and 3 MVP's (he finished top 5 six other times).  He was an all-star every year he played except his rookie year.  Chipper is great, but he has a little traveling to be the Mick.
