I tried Vietnamese Cobbler fish as a replacment  but its not a patch on cod

in certain areas cod is on the decline thats why birdseye use polock now

i find coley the best substitute, and i love haddock. pollack and whiting are other possible alternatives. actually my favourite fish are oily ones; herring, mackerel and sprats.

I read some were that the cods eggs are eaten by a crab and that the cod when they are bigger feed of the crabs in normal time when man has not over fished there was a balance by over fishing man has upset the balance I think it was off Canada

Whether cod is endangered or not, it will still be over-harvested for the majority of fish products. A better question is:

Is the cod that I buy from a sustainable source?

...and the answer for most sources, is invariably no.

I see a lot of people are getting their information fron greenpeace and mcs.  It really does not do,to rely on a single,biased, source of information !!  Cod have (in some areas) made a startling comeback and are difficult to avoid. In other areas recruitment has slowed,due to a change in the plankton regime. (the newly prevelant species within the plankton mass,either occur at the wrong time,or do not suit the newly hatched cod larvae)  In answer to your question, on the whole, no.

Yes - best not to buy cod.  If you must, pick line caught rather than net.

Or you could try something like pollack instead - its pretty cheap but a good substitute for Cod.
