  1. Codeine is a depressant opiate. It depresses the Central Nervous System (CNS). Codeine is a pro-drug. It converts to morphine in the body. The morphine is what affects the user. The conversion of codeine to morphine in the body is 10% efficient. This means if a person were to ingest 100mg of codeine it would metabolize into 10mg of morphine inside the body. Codeine and all opiates can cause addiction (psychological and physical dependency) with withdrawal symptoms manifesting after cessation.
