Question:

Is college dumbed down?

You'd have to be an absolute idiot to flunk out of college. Maybe in Ivy League colleges they actually challenge students but from my experience, college isn't that hard. What are your thoughts?

  1. it depends on your major. Because there's just no way you can tell me that psychology and political science is as easy as electrical or aerospace engineering. You are responsible for challenging yourself, the college is there just to provide the means. Anyone can get through college with a degree, but not everyone attains their full potential.

  2. Yes, I agree with you. Granted, yes there are certain courses you can take which are instantly going to be harder just because of the topic matter, but I really feel like college isn't as hard as they told us it would be in high school. I feel like we don't go as in depth as I expected. Most classes are so broad in what they cover, it makes it impossible to really  challenge your mind. It seems as though like someone else said, college is the new high school. It's almost required to get AT LEAST a master's to make decent money these days. Now, it IS fairly easy to fail out of college, but I do think you are correct. It's not that hard.

I hope I'm making sense. ha

  3. I wouldn't say anyone who flunks out is an idiot. I'd just call them lazy. Well, maybe they're idiots for opting to flunk out.

  4. You need to break that down in layman's terms.  Just cause I've gone to college don't mean I'm some kind of English expert!

  5. College has changed a lot in the past few decades. College used to be a privilege reserved for only a few, now it is treated as if it is a right entitled to all. Because of this, colleges have become, for the large part, standardized to accommodate the lower end of the intelligence pool. Its sad, because college degrees are meaning less and less each day. Now, more and more degrees are necessary for further advancement. It does depend on the college you choose, though. I worked hard throughout high school to get into a very challenging college, and I love every minute of it. The challenges are where you find them. Sure, there are many "dumbed down" classes at many colleges, but there are many other challenges on campus: extra activities, advanced classes, more stimulating professors, etc. If its too easy for you, then find something more challenging. But, as it is, most people are content not to challenge themselves and just to wade through the waters of college. Its all up to the student.

  6. Depends on the college and the program, not to mention what country you're studying in.  In some cases though, it seems like college is becoming the new high school.
