Question:

Is community college a good idea?

I just graduated from high school with double honors and a 3.97 GPA, and although I got accepted into two 4 year schools (UT Austin and UNT) I decided to attend community college. Is this a good idea? I am planning on majoring in biology and then from there hopefully going to medical school, but I'm afraid they will frown on the community college.

  1. community college is fine if you want do 2 years there and then a regular college....As long as you have a degree your fine whereever you go. Unless they career you want is competitive and only pick the best with deciding what college you went to

  2. Quick input, all the answers are correct except Ayshiel's, if you want to go to medical school you do not want an associates.

Try this site, very good stuff on med school:

    Good luck!

  3. I'm planning on majoring in biology as well and then going to medical school if possible. Community College is a good idea, you can get things done cheaper and sometimes even quicker. You can transfer early in some cases and still be at a junior level at a university. Medical schools shouldn't frown upon it, they will most likely look at your work for your last two years. Make sure you make the most out of your community college experience though. Keep a high grade point average and make sure you're involved in clubs, volunteer work, and even a job. Follow all transfer requirements and tak major specific classes to ensure you are a competitve applicant. Stanford School of Medicine thinks it's fine!

  4. Is your community college accredited? Only go to a nationally accredited school. Many grad schools and jobs only accept degrees from accredited universities.

Is the main reason for not going to a 4-year school because of money? There are a great deal of different scholarships you can apply for. Try using fastweb to find scholarships you qualify for. Don't spend /any/ money trying to get a scholarship. Don't use any scholarship searches that ask for money. You can sign up for fastweb, which is totally free using my affiliate link here:

If you're sure about medicine, pre-med really, really, really is a much better choice than biology. However, if you plan on pursuing a post-graduate degree, where you get your bachelors isn't that important after you've finished school. The last school your attend should be the best.

  5. well, community college is fine, they usually are 2 yrs degree. but if ur gonna to medical school, i suggest u go to 1 or 2 yrs community, then transfer to another  U.

  6. The best thing I can tell you to do is to get your associates there. Make sure you do good (you seem pretty smart). Then go to UT Austin, that is what they will look at. Not the first two years. I wish I would have done that instead of going half way across the u.s. to attend CO state. Because now I'm over $30,000 in debt from student loans. As long as your GPA is high, and your BA degree says you graduated from a good school, that's all they care about.

  7. They will not frown on it. Go to community for as long as you can to get the basics knocked out then transfer to a University.

That is what most people are doing these days because Universitys are PRICEY!
