Is consciousness associated with a material brain?

it seems that it must be because there is no concsiousness without our brain, but is consciousness something that is a product of the brain or the human brain accessing into consciousness?

  1. My guess is that 99% of brain scientists would say yes, that consciousness is a product of the material brain, and that there's no "greater consciousness" outside of the brain to be tapped into, with the possible exception of Wikipedia ;-)

There have been some ideas proposed by what I'd call fringe scientists that suggest that there may well be a quantum mechanical mechanism by which one brain could communicate with another over long distances.  Some of those have been based on quantum entanglement, which so far has not demonstrated any ability to transmit information. Moreover, there is good reason to believe that the Universe "wouldn't allow it" due to causality violations.

On the other hand, it's very hard to prove a negative, that we have no connection outside of our five senses, but there's scant evidence for anything else.  Similar to theories about the existence (or lack thereof) of God, one could propose a "unified mind" theory that says everyone can and does communicate with it, but what that mind conveys to us is not something we can use to prove its existence, that it's there, but its presence is impossible to prove.   This would imply that you could not gain knowledge from the unified mind that would have been impossible to gain otherwise, because that would prove its existence.  So any knowledge you gain must therefore come from sources that you can access without the unified mind coming into play.

Unfortunately, this idea doesn't really provide any useful insights about our minds, and requires pure faith to believe.  It might be a comforting idea, I suppose.  Like Santa Claus.
