Question:

Is contact solution harmful to carpets/fabrics?

I'm not talking about the hydrogen peroxide stuff, but the regular strength stuff, like Renu. I've spilled it on my carpet before, but I have also used it to clean up stains on my carpet and on other fabrics. It doesn't appear to be harmful, nothing has happened yet. However, when I suggested that my mother use some to get a stain out, she flipped out--saying it was a bad idea without saying why.

She does, however, love little remedies like that. Her favorite? Shaving cream to get stains out.

So, I was just wondering if it truly is harmful, because it works great.

Thank you for any insight.

  1. My sister always called it The God of Stains because when she had contact solution and me or my bro went in to her panicking about a big ol' stain she would whip it out and it works a treat, with no ill affects. It works on pretty much anything, with the added benefit it just does not stain (which is handy.... as it is for the eyes!)

The weak stuff is great like you said... just tell your mum that's coming from an expert of all stains :D Good luck, and happy scrubbing!

  2. Contact solution in usually just sterile saline so I don't see why it would hurt, and hey if it works - why not?
