Is convection when hot air rises and cold air comes in to take its place?

  1. Yes, your partialy right. But convection takes place in waters. If you heat some water in a vessel, the water in the lower part will get heated first and water particles will rise upwards and the colder particles will sink down to get heated. Whenever you touch the surface of the water, heating in a vessel you will see that upper surface will be colder than the water below.

  3. umm.........somewhat it is correct but the actually it is the process of tranfer of heat by the actual movement of its particals. this is the process by which the liquids and gasses are heated as thier molecules are not so closely packed as in solids and therefore the molecules are free to move. ican give you one example that when you boil water first the water molecules at the base receive the heat enery and the they are replaced by water and then they are replaced by cold water

    you are right that that convection is ( in case of air i.e. gases ) when the hot air gets heated up and rises so it creates a region of low pressure because the hot air has risen so the cold air rushes to replace it and the loss in pressure

    this causes convectional rain  and also the land and sea breezes.
