Is corn cob okay for temporary rat bedding?

I can't get out to the store and I don't have any money to send with anybody.

All I have left is a box of corn cob bedding from the bird's cage set.

Would it be alright for a couple of days?

  1. no

  2. Rats can live in pretty much anything temporarily-- it should be just fine.

  3. It should probably be alright for a couple of days if changed frequently. Make sure your rats don't start trying to eat it, some animals choke on it. It needs to be changed frequently because corn cob has a tendency to harbor mold when wet.

  4. It's fine.  It can get moldy if left for long periods of time damp (like, if your water bottle leaks), but it's actually a recommended litter by some because it does so well at controlling ammonia.  In tests, it places first because it absorbs well (the same qualities that can make it a good place for mold).  In a normal, aerated cage it is just fine whenobviously moist areas are removed frequently; certainly not as horrible as pine or cedar.  Most people mix it with something else such as carefresh for comfort.

In proper sanitary conditions, it isn't a problem.  You just remove the obviously soiled bedding every day. Now if you let it sit for a week, yea, then you have problems.  It's dampness that starts the mold and lets it grow, not the corncob itself.  There is also similar problems with Aspen and others too when damp, as well as old vegetables.
