I think it is popular among older people, people in their 40's upwards. my mother and all her friends are massive fans of charlie pride and dolly parton among others, they are both american. there are a few Irish country and western singers. there is a country music radio station in Ireland, most of the songs on it are by american singers, radio stations that don't have huge followings after a year tend to close down, and it's still on air so someone (excluding my mother) has to listen to it. I can't listen to that station but I do like some of willie nelson's songs.
