While enquiring about world space radio on phone, the executive insisted me to purchase the system on phone only by credit card. The same happened while I was enquiring about an insurance policy. How safe it is?

  1. Did they call you or did you call them? If they called you don't give them your information. If you researched the product and company adequately before you called them and you feel certain that you are dealing with a legitimate company selling a legitimate product then go ahead and complete your transaction. Try googling the company name, phone number, etc. Often you will find lots of information that you can use to make a decision about whether or not to do business with a certain company.

  4. It is not safe to pass the Credit Card No itself to any third party. You  may land up in financial losses in future by some unscrupulous people.

  5. The reason they insist is because they probably get money for each customer they get over the phone. If you are calling a "respectable" and established firm, I don't think it is unsafe in the sense that they will rip you off. If they do, you have their phone number. It is worse to give out these details to "firms" calling you. Never ever do that.

Still, I would never give out my credit card number over the phone. If I want to buy I'll mail them the order. Either by post or internet.

Also, if you have a cordless analog phone anyone with a police scanner radio can listen in, so in that regards it is unsafe. Still, it is a less likely scenario than spy-ware on a computer snapping up the credit card.
