Is cruise control better for gas mileage?

When I use the cruise control in my car, is it helping or hurting my gas mileage? Or make any difference at all?

Would it depend on the type of road I'm driving on (hills vs. flat)?

  1. YES...it better

except for very hilly then you can predict better than it can compensate.

  2. Keeping a steady speed helps your gas mileage.  The more your speed fluctuates, the more gas you're wasting.  So yes, cruise control is better for gas mileage.

  3. Cruise control helps your gas mileage, as it keeps the speed more steady.  As the car accelerates, it is burning much more gas than when it is holding a constant speed, and while the car decelerating uses less gas than keeping the speed constant, it is not enough to make up for the acceleration that occurs when you use the gas pedal to try to keep the speed steady.  The speed will creep up or down, requiring adjustment, so the constant acceleration and deceleration of driving without cruise control uses more gas than cruise control.

  4. Use of a cruise control versus manual operation would definitely result in a more consistent mileage report.
