  1. Dark colored lava is usually mafic.  It is runny or has low viscosity.  The primary component of mafic lava is basalt.  This type of lava is the predominant one in Hawaii.

    Because the lava is runny, the water can easily and slowly escape producing a quiet eruption.  This would not be the case with water-containing felsic lava.
