Is darts a one-night stand for Tony West?
He might not be that old on the oche, but he surely has the potential of causing turbulence equivalent to a tornado.
The 39-year-old darts player after spending a couple of years with BDO has finally got hold of the Tour Card and subsequently the license that provides him with the accessibility into the PDC.
The real den of darts, the den where you encounter the lion of darts on every stage. Lions like Phil Taylor, Adrian Lewis and Gary Anderson.
Even though some of them are aging but they can still not be underrated when it comes to performance.
Executing upsets and bouncing back into the game, just when it is about to end, is their second nature.
However, apart from all the dangers and threats the players, when joining this circuit, are exposed to innumerable frontiers and opportunities.
With the help of these prospects, they can refine and modify their game substantially.
The main question that remains after all this advocacy of PDC, is Tony West the player who can actually raise the benchmark of PDC in terms of performance?
Or to better rephrase it, is West an appropriate and eligible selection when it comes to PDC?
In either case, there are doubts and reservations among pundits. Once again, the most effective tool we have to reach our conclusion is through the assessment of West’s career so far.
One of the prominent achievements that he has made throughout his career in darts has been in the form of reaching the finals of Winmau World Masters.
The event that took place back in 2002, allowed West the opportunity to play against Mark Dudbridge, where he lost by 7-4.
It was from here he made way into the BDO World Championship 2004. He was once again able to perform well by reaching the top 16 of the event.
However, once again he had to face defeat at the hands of Andy Fordham who emerged as the eventual champion of the event.
It was from here precisely when his performance began to slump. He failed to qualify for any major event of darts in the years 2007, 2008 and 2009, respectively.
He managed to reach the second round of the championship held in 2010 but was defeated by Dave Chisnall.
Similar was the situation he encountered at BDO, where he had to face disqualification from the event in the very first round after facing defeat at the hands of Martin Adams.
After a long standing slump, he was able to get a breakthrough in his career by entering the PDC circuit along with his brother Steve.
During his qualification round he was able to defeat Keegan Brown to obtain a license of the PDC.
Now, when he is able to make it into the new circuit, the million dollar question remains: how effectively will he be able to handle the competition that he will be facing at the PDC?
According to pundits and experts of darts, Tony is most likely to go through a tough time at PDC.
There are players whom he has never faced. With each of these players introducing their new and novel technique of game, West will have to devise his own counter-strategy to effectively weather the looming competition.
At present, his game lacks a touch of professionalism, the consistency which is integral for a darts player.
Once he is able to develop this, he will be in a much better form and position to make his own place in the game.
