  1. no i dont think so, if it hit a major artery then yes they'll die from excessive bleeding

No, people survive this injury quite often if they have access to medical care soon after the incident.  Another poster was correct to mention large blood vessels in the area, mainly the inferior vena cava, which can cause massive blood loss quickly if they are injured.  However, people do sometimes survive injuries to these vessels, too, if treated early enough.  

    Also, while the simple answer to your question is that death is not certain, it is important to remember that it is possible.  Even if the injury itself does not cause death, the complications following it can.  This include complications with bleeding related to massive blood loss as well as pneumonia or blood stream infections due to being intubated or having central venous lines in place.
