Is design a weird thing for a guy to pursue?

I'm 14 and a guy. I'm really into design, whether it be fashion or just how things are put together. I'm a very artsy person. In my spare time I draw and enter a lot of shoe design contests. I'm also really into classic cars and that kinda thing. I was just wandering if it is weird for a guy to be interested in that sort of thing or not.

  1. Absolutely not. I am quite proud that you know what you want to do at 14. I don't know why you would feel that it might be "weird" for a guy. Design is a great major for both male and female that is rewarding. Plus there is so many areas you can go into..fashion, car, architecture, engineering, website... Venture into design and discover what you would like to do the most and concentrate on that. Good luck!

  2. It's only "weird" if you think it's so.  And, if your friends tell you it's weird, then, as friends, they are not being supportive.

If you have the talent and the passion, then follow it as far as it will take you.

There is, of course, no guarantee of success, but, the better you are at it, the better your chances.  Don't narrow your scope to much.  The more versitile you are, the more likely you will have paying assignments come your way.  Don't neglect your studies of history, social studies, math and English.  ALL of these apply in the art world as art is a reflection of life, whether it is in fine arts, or commercial arts.  A designer that cant spell or do the math required for professional level work us useless.  An artist that does not know his place in the social structure of the culture he lives in is a lost voice in the dark void.

Meanwhile, keep practicing.  Every moment spent on polishing your craft prepares you for the professional environment.

  3. I don't think it's weird at all. It's true that design, art, fashion, etc. are typically considered female areas of interest, but that doesn't mean that it is wrong or weird for a male to be interested in them. As long as you are being true to yourself, the closed-minded people who disagree with what you're doing don't matter. As for the second part of your question, you're only 14 years old, so just keep doing what you're doing for now. Once you get to be old enough to look for colleges, be sure to select a good school that is known for its art, fashion, and/or design department. That should set you on the right track to do what you want to do later in life. Hope this helps!

  4. normal like anything. And the interest in cars is definitely more a guy thing. Check out industrial design, a job which many guys hold...

  5. Dude, don't listen to anyone who tells you art and design aren't masculine activities. There are guys in fashion design, shoe design (my uncle's one of them), automobile design, visual arts, illustration (guilty as charged), you name it. If you're surrounded by guys who are telling you differently, brush 'em off your shoulder. They're ignorant. More importantly, they're jealous, and they're going to be seething with jealousy when you become the success you're preparing to become.

  6. There are many men in design! Besides the men in fashion, you can do mechanical design, car design, advertising design, landscape architecture, architecture, engineering of all sorts, and much, much more.
