Is devoting one's life to volunteer{specificly the homeless} a worthwhile occupation?

  1. For the long term, working with the homeless or any situation where people are down and out will involve the following:

    Low to moderate wages.

    No pension or health plans.

    Working for NGO's that are at the whim of government funding.

    Working in shoddy facilities. (usually, but not always)

    Constant hassling with government bureaucracy.

    Working from crisis to crisis rather than long term planning.

    Restrictive financial budgets.

    Constant emotional highs and lows.

    High turnover of workers.

    HOWEVER, if you really love your fellow man and have high self esteem, it's the most rewarding work in the world.  If you don't work at this full time, then the above answerer has excellent advice.  Remember, your well being comes first, otherwise you are no good to anyone, including yourself.

  2. yes... you might not get paid but the karma is great.. also it makes you feel like you mean something to the world.. your devotion helps hundreds of homeless children and adults. i recommend though also getting a great job so that you have enough money to help the homeless and yourself.
