Question:

Is dilation of the eyes safe?

I've had my eyes dilates only once in the 10 years I've been wearing glasses/contacts... it made me very sick and I almost passed out. If I've never had it done for 10 years then is it really necessary? Is it safe?

  1. it is only bad if you stare at the sun with no sunglasses on.  it starins your eyeballs and can cause serious damage.   ")

  2. Does dilitation hurt?

  3. It's necessary when you go to the optometrist or opthamologist and they need to look inside your eye to make sure everything is alright.  I've had this done a few times when I'd go in for my eye check-ups.

  4. It is safe -  but perhaps before your next dilation you tell them of your past experience.  I would have you put light pressure on your nose up by the corner of your eyes to keep the drops from draining as much into your tear ducts.  This helps keep the drops from absorbing systemically.

The reason behind dilation is to get better views of your retina.  We check for signs of diseases (diabetes, high blood pressure, etc), tears or holes in the retina, and many other things.  Without the dilation, some of these things would not be possible to see.  So, it's done to keep you and your eyes healthy!

  5. It is necessary and it is safe, they know what they're doing,  and you may have something wrong that son only be seen with dialation.

    Just a possibility.
