  1. It does not harm your system in any way. It is in fact very helpful and can sometimes speed up your system. I defrag about once a month.

  2. do not do it too often, as it is one of the hardest wearing operations on any drive. Once a month while the machine is not in use is a good idea as it re-organises all the tiny sections of files spread around the machine into continuous sections, making the machine run faster.

  3. Why u say defragmenting is harm and why should is had in ur computer if it harm to ur computer.Defragmenting is process where can speed up the system progress. So,when u always defragment,ur computer smoothly progress.

  4. Of course it doesn't harm your system. In the context of administering computer systems, defragmentation is a process that reduces the amount of fragmentation in file systems. It does this by physically reorganizing the contents of the disk to store the pieces of each file close together and contiguously. It also attempts to create larger regions of free space using compaction to impede the return of fragmentation. Some defragmenters also try to keep smaller files within a single directory together, as they are often accessed in sequence.

  5. Hi, let me first introduced myself; I'm Edgar and I've worked with Microsoft. Now system fragmentation is only useful when the computer actually needs it. What is fragmentation: it's a way the computer organizes all its documents for fasting processing. I would recommend you to download the following defrag. product which is completely free, wroks faster than the microsoft one, and it better in general.

  6. it takes all the little empty clusters and makes them one BIG cluster

    windows loves de-fragging

it makes the fragments go away

  7. its a good thing. makes less work on your hard drive when looking for files. Good to do about once a month or when you make large file changes. I recommend IObit smart defrag. It does it automatcally in the background when it notices changes. Works well. :)

Also the Advancved WindowsCare from them is very nice. Will cleanup other issues with your computer and improve performance.

  8. Yes, it can damage your HDD if you scan too much.

Defragmentation is one of the most demanding things that can be done to HDD. Why when using a disk optimizer they recommend not doing it daily (I'm testing fate with a Raptor RAID-0 and defragging and optimizing by name daily [sometimes 2x] -- 6 months later they still work fine [but these are Raptors and have a 5 year warranty]).

But for normal computer users, defrag your disk when it's about 3% fragmented. Not much difference in performance at less than 3%, and it'll save these 1 year warranty HDD from being scrap parts.
