  1. The US has been a multicultural country after it got established and running good. It is the greatest nation in the world. It is good to learn about other cultures but the new people coming here should also respect the cultures of others and the ones we have created here as well.

  2. It depends on the history of the nation.  Historically homogenous nations often have trouble adapting to immigrants.  (Western Europe these days)  Nations that are created by other nations where lines are drawn with no regard to the beliefs, languages, races, religions etc... have problems because they are artificial and one group usually ends up dominating the others.  (Iraq, Rwanda, Yugoslavia)

But a country like the US where diversity of the above factors has been the way of things pretty much since the start, it works in our favor because we accept the differences (sometimes after things like civil wars) and they serve to strengthen the nation.

  3. Well, I'm a historian myself.  While differences in culture and language can certainly act as centrifugal forces, diversity can also allow breadth of knowledge and experience, and multi-culturalism proved a broader and deeper base to a nation.  One of the only reasons I support the idea of designating English as the only official language in this country is because I think there do need to be some bidning forces, as well.  Compulsory public education is another positive binding force, as is a shared sense of national identity.

  4. I would say that some of the most successful nations of all time were multi-cultural: Ancient Rome, Ancient Persia, Russia, The United States, ect.

Nations that are too homogenius may seem stronger because there is less domestic conflict, but they tend to be too inflexible. Great countries tend to cobble together the best aspects of different cultures, so having access to different cultures in helpful.

  5. It depends.  Are you living in a n**i regime?  No?  Then yes.  Diversity is good.
