Is downloading music illegal?

I heard that its only illegal if you download it then sell it. But if you just download it onto your computer from Frostwire/Limewire/Bearshare ect. and put it on an MP3 player is it legal?

It is illegal in the civil sense of the law. You won't go to jail for it, as people are suggesting...but the copyright owner can sue you, and the recording industry has shown that they will sue pretty much at random...although they generally go after people who upload or make it available to others rather than those who download it, since there is some argument as to whether it is legal to download a song that you have paid for at some time, and proving you didn't pay for it is virtually impossible.

Best bet is to go through iTunes or Rhapsody or another legal avenue of download. Quality is usually better, and there is no risk of contracting nasty viruses.
