Is drain smell toxic?

I have an open drain vent exhaust for my toilet open in the attic and have been meaning to run it up through the roof but am wondering if i am poisining us. it doesnt smell at all but I am sure the smell does linge linger in the attic. Could it be hurting us?

  1. not likely, unless you're hanging out in the attic..

    you'd best take care of it right away though, before it becomes a bigger issue with mold etc..

You must vent it outside ASAP.  Sewer gas is not just smelly it is flammable!  Accumulating sewer gas can explode.  That is why the vent exists in the first place.  Do not let any open flame or heat source get anywhere near your attic.  Open and vent the attic and cap off that pipe until you finish running the vent.  Sewer gas is METHANE!  Methane is colorless and odorless.  Please see to this immediately.  If you have a fire and an investigation finds this to be the cause your insurance may not cover the resulting damage.
