  1. Your knowledge of drafting & gesture drawing is more important than your knowledge of any operating system

  2. Most of the final stages are done on the computer. There are graphic tablets that a lot of people in animation studios and film editing and some designers use. I use one.

Hand drawing is still the best way to quickly flesh out an idea before you go through the time and trouble of mocking it up on the computer. In design its called thumbnails or comps, in film and animation it is a story board, in advertising depending on the media it's either a comp, storyboard or thumbnail.

Learning to hand draw is still a very use full skill if you want to get into any of those fields.

  3. NO. Its always done. Most concepts start out as freehand sketches and drawings. Most graphics can sketch, and most of us are very good drawers. Sometimes a client will want a hand drawn item for something. Most of us can do it. What we do next is we'll usually scan it, then manipulate it using one of our softwares of choice so it looks good.

  4. I think in the intial stages, where you brainstorm and get your ideas out is done by hand.

then when things get more refined your transfer onto post production equipment. they're just tools.

i think 90 percent it always starts with the sketch.
