I am 16 and I am getting my first car. One of the cars that my dad is willing to buy me is a BMW 325i. It is the car that i want the most but he thinks that BMW's are more expensive to fix. Is this true and is having a BMW really worth it?

  1. Not since the 1988-low 90's changeover.  Older BMWs are still to this day more reliable and cheaper to operate.

He people who thumbs me down own a BMW and will learn there lesson soon and to the people who don't have one they will learn a little bit later then the current owner.  But go ahead keep buying them we shop owners love to take your money..

  2. You're looking at buying a luxury automobile... so you have to understand that costs are different than most other cars.  BMW's have a lot of options, a great ride, and great handling.  But, you pay for it.  A lot of the luxuries that BMW added to their automobiles were great back in the day but are wearing out as days go by.  Any parts that do wear out are usually more expensive then that of american or japanese vehicles or are more difficult to replace.  If you don't have any desire to work on these cars yourself, then don't buy one.  If you have either have some mechanical abilites or the desire to learn... by all means, go for it.  That's what I've done.  But, don't expect every system on an older BMW to work from day one or to stay working.  And, paying mx. labor on these vehicles adds up quick... so unless dad has an open wallet, don't do it.  If you do get one, do yourself a favor and buy a bentley manual... it's the bible of bimmers.  Almost any maintenance you'll need to do is laid out in an easy to read/decipher way.

  3. The BMW 325i, If Bought Brand New Or Still With A Warranty It Will Cost NOTHING For However Long The Warranty Lasts, I Don't Know After That.. Buying A Mercedes or Lexus Would Cost A Lot More.

  4. Oh Yea, believe it. Try tricking your dad into getting an older bmw with a bigger engine. 330's for example they're funner than the 325's. or just get a mini which is probably cheaper than a 325.

  5. BMWs are worth it. They're generally good cars and are recognizable as BMW's. However, as a 16 year old, Im sure that you would want something that is a little less expensive to maintain/fix. You have to put premium gas in there and pay a lot of money for basic maintenence. Other people might recommend that you get a Honda, which is a little too common...so get an Acura! If you go down a little bit on your standards for a new car, you can save a lot of money. If your not into the whole tuning a civic/integra thing, try an older model Acura sedan or coupe. Maybe even a Lexus or something more reliable. If you have the money to maintain a BMW, I would go for it though.

  6. well, you have to use common sense. if you're buying an expensive car, of course it's going to be more expensive to fix. to me, no, it's not worth it, unless you're completely loaded and don't care about how much it costs to maintain the car.

also, it's hard to find people to work on them. their not a common ford, chevy, or dodge...

everything is more expensive, but then again, you get what you pay for..

honestly, if you're worried about money at all, go for something else, i'd stay away from the high dollar cars for your first one. my first car i beat the h**l out of, just cause i was young and inexperienced. i would buys oemthing cheaper, and get something like that later.

    trust me.

  7. my b m w is 2003..the new battery was 344.00 dollars..and you will have only a few places to work on it..expensive to keep up..and insurance is more

  8. Yes, it's true, and no, it's not worth it.

A good used first car, that is reliable and cheap to maintain would be a V6 Mustang or Camaro if you want something sporty, or a used Crown Victoria Police Interceptor, if you want a sleeper. (Was my first car when I was 17, and all my friends couldn't believe how fast a 4 door sedan could be.... they're cheap and easy to maintain, and safe too.)

  9. I'll keep this short...

I have a bmw and had it for a first car.

the handling of it seriously saved my life a number of times. the track times of it compared to a mercedes or audi are 5 seconds apart which is a BIG difference.

If you're stupid, which we all are with our first car. You will go into that one turn too fast. BUT instead of you wrecking which'd happen with any other car besides a porsche and bmw, you will barely make it and still be alive. thanks to the bmw's better handling

PLUS its a chick magnet. MAGNET.....

  10. omg yes but maintaining it is a lot but totally worth it

  11. None of the answers above are right.  It depends on how old the BMW is going to be.

If it is fairly new and has low miles, it will be covered by the factor warranty, which covers just about EVERYTHING, from windshield wipers to brakes.  That means that maintenance costs are ZERO for the first five years or 60,000 miles -- and that can be extended.

The answer is that yes, driving a BMW is worth it.  People that have not owned one have no say in this, IMO.  The quality of the car really makes a big difference.  Once you get used to it, it's very difficult to go back to a "regular" make of car.

Although, as others have said, you are 16 so it's not really going to matter all that much what kind of car you have, as long as it works.

  12. Hey i just want to let you know that i worked for 2 summers and saved up about 17,000.  I bought a 2001 bmw 325i this past summer for 13,500 (my first car too).  i got a heck of good deal for it and  I was only 17 by the way.  Anyway within the first month i wanted to make some minor repairs (replace two speakers, two new drivebelts, and new blinkers for the front) that i figured i would fix. I knew bimmers were expensive but i was shocked that for those few things my bill was roughly $1,100 for everything. I also took it to an official BMW dealership. Of course i had the money to pay for it but still, these are expensive cars.  If you think you can handle the costs, go for it.  I love my car and love the looks on my friends faces.
