im in Australia and here driving with one arm is illegal. I have got cerebral palsy and thus in order to drive I must have a spinner k**b because I cant drive without using one hand. however I've heard in the US you can legally drive with one hand is this true AND FURTHERMORE is it safe.

I am thinking about moving to the US at some stage and if I do would I be able to remove the spinner k**b condition on my licence and even if so if its not safe am I just better to continue using a spinner k**b anyway.

  1. yes if you want to have a  serious accident.

  2. driving w/ one arm is perfectly safe.

i mean i drive a stick shift, most time i drive w/ one arm on the steering wheel while the other hand on the shift k**b.

i drive like that even in crazy rush hour and Manhattan rushes.

  3. safe is a relative term.  twos arms is definitely safer because you can turn the wheel more quickly if you have to.  also, if you are rear-ended, the wheel is more likely to spin out of your grip if you are turning and only have one hand on the wheel.

however, usually i think its just as safe.  i never knew it was illegal to drive with one hand in Australia.  and people in New York complain about not being allowed to talk on cell phones while driving.

  4. One arm is safer than no arms.

  5. One arm is OK as long as the eyes are focused on the task at hand...The spinner k**b (the attachable k**b to the steering wheel) is a problem...Here in the US, the k***s are illegal...I don't even know of any instances where they might be allowed for medical conditions...When you come, check with the motor vehicle dept for the state where you'll be living and see what they can do for you.

    All the best.

p.s. Get a copy of your driver record a day or two before you leave for the US...It may be required by the DMV in the state you'll be living and it will have to be less than 30 days old.

  6. i think its unsafe cuz either the police can  mabe ticket u for that and if you sweat you arm will slip and .... CRASH!!! I would  recomend 2 hands.

  7. no you need your hand

  8. If you have done this for a while then I would say to continue doing it and as for the spinner, it is legal in the U.S. and you should keep it on..

  9. I've heard that they are illigal but I see them on truck drivers stearing wheels all the time and they go thru dot hassels. I would just tell them it's a sentamental thing. It belong to your daddy or something its for good luck and they would probably be cool with it.

  10. dont worry dude. its safe just pay attention, duh

  11. Yes, it is safe. I have to agree with the first answer, as I drive standard, too. It's rather natural to have one hand on the wheel and the other shifting gears. I also tend to drive with one hand on the wheel when driving automatic, too. To me, it's just more natural feeling. Typcally when learning to drive, they tend to stress the "10 o'clock, 2 o'clock" idea. I rarely do that.
